A look back at festival day 5
The last day of the festival offered a great mix of films and personal discussions with the filmmakers. Many thanks to all the guests who made this day a great way to round off the 30th JFBB!
There were still many great films to discover at the JFBB on Sunday. Here are some of our highlights:
THE BLOND BOY FROM THE CASBAH
"The Blond Boy From The Casbah" tells the story of 15-year-old Antoine, who grows up in Algiers in the 1950s. He experiences the first signs of the Algerian conflict in a chaotic, loving household in which religion plays no major role. The story, told in retrospect, shows how Antoine discovers his passion for cinema as political tensions rise. Christian Berkel, the lead actor, was present and spoke about his experiences and the challenges of filming.
GOD SPEAKS YIDDISH
"God Speaks Yiddish" offers insights into the ultra-orthodox Jewish community. Tuvia Tenenbom, who once turned his back on this community, returns to his home neighbourhood in Jerusalem. He seeks dialogue with the residents
and captures a variety of perspectives without passing judgement on his counterpart. The screening was followed by a reading from the book of the same name, during which Tenenbom shared his personal experiences.
THE PRESIDENTS' TAILOR and THREE ATTEMPTS AT GOYIFICATION
The Presidents' Tailor" tells the moving story of a Jewish tailor who became famous through his work in Berlin's Jewish community. The short film "Three Attempts at Goyification" by Michaela Kobsa-Mark shows her own search for a new identity: Michaela no longer wants to be Jewish and tries to become part of the 'majority society'. In a self-experiment, she examines the questions of belonging and identity. Michaela Kobsa-Mark was present for a Q&A after the screening.
We would like to thank our audience, all filmmakers and are already looking forward to the 31st JFBB 2025!
