In both pre-war and post-war Latvia regimes come and go. Painter Ainsis paints the signs for the powers that be, with the colours varying from green to red to brown. His heart belongs to the daughter of a local Jewish pharmacist, and yet this young love finds itself ground down by interpersonal mistrust, political violence and state terror. A tragicomic small town saga on the power shifts and crimes of the Second World War, as well as yearning and opportunism.

"One of the the biggest ambitions of the film was to portray so many historical events without turning it into a formal kaleidoscope. A chain of events shifts the genre from a nice provincial drama to epic magical realism." (Viestur Kairish)
