Special Screening & Diskussion: THE SPOILS at the Bundesplatz-Kino

THE SPOILS

Canada 2024, documentary, Director: Jamie Kastner, 104 min.

Special Screening with Discussion

The German-Jewish art dealer and patron Max Stern fled the Nazi regime in 1937 after the forced sale of his gallery in Düsseldorf via Paris and London to Canada, where he arrived in 1943. In Montréal, he rose to become one of the most influential gallery owners, specializing in modern art. In 2018, the Stadtmuseum Düsseldorf planned an exhibition about the renowned art dealer, but it was canceled at short notice and postponed to 2021. The opening was delayed due to ongoing discussions about the restitution of Nazi-looted art. The dispute in Düsseldorf over restitution and restitution claims, which had been smouldering for years, sometimes took on absurd, dehumanizing traits - who does the art belong to, and who thinks the looted art belongs to or shouldn't really belong to? Jamie Kastner's documentary summarizes the arguments, details and anecdotes of the case, which is exemplary for the Nazi-looted art debate.
