DEAR THOMAS
Dreamer, writer, rebel: Thomas Brasch, born in 1945 as the son of Jewish emigrants exiled in England, quickly comes into conflict with the authorities of the then newly-founded GDR, as well as with his father, the country’s deputy minister of culture. His first play is banned, he is forced out of film school, and then the protests against the Warsaw Pact invasion of the ČSSR are suppressed. The biography of a century that draws on the story of a restless individual, told in dazzling black and white and employing the same combination of poetry and anger that defines Brasch's work. A stirring feature film about an individual whose life journey was closely interwoven with the contradictions between political ideals, socialist reality and a longing for the here and now, and how these very contradictions can prove to be one’s undoing.
